West Coast Creative Writing

"No Ordinary Creative Writing Class"

Do you know if your story is a screenplay, a NOVEL, a MEMOIR, a SHORT STORY or a fabulous series of PERSONAL ESSAYS that will sell to magazines?

IT PROBABLY IS!

And yet, you've done nothing to make it a reality but dream and think and wish because you're afraid writing is too hard.

Do you know if your STORY is a comedy or a drama or somewhere in between?

Do you know it's not hard, but SHOCKINGLY EASY, and an AWESOME HIGH to find out?

Do you know you can stop thinking about it and just do it by letting me GIVE YOU CREATIVE WRITING PROMPTS THAT TAKE YOU TO PLACES IN YOUR MIND YOU HAVEN'T VISITED FOR A LONG TIME?

ZOOM PAST YOUR RESISTANCE and CONFUSION and START WRITING with the help of a supportive professional.

In just one three-hour session, you can be on your way.

Let me guide you with humor, respect and personal attention through fun exercises in a safe writing space where the rules of the road are positive feedback and encouragement.

WE LEARN, WE WRITE, WE READ ALOUD. WE LAUGH, WE CRY…WE DISCOVER!

Whether you have a project you're working on, or whether it is your first time sharing your work, this class is for you.

"SO YOU THINK YOUR LIFE’S A MOVIE?"
A Master Class In Screenplay Construction

(Note: This class is not just for screenwriters. It is for novelists, memoirists, essayists – writers of all genres - who want to learn to get to a good story fast.)

In “So You Think Your Life’s A Movie” , we’ll take a look at the most dramatic, life-changing events in your life and the people involved. Not only will you learn screenplay construction and character development, by the end of the class, you’ll be writing a scene from your own life, casting it from members of the class and putting it on it’s feet.

Every day we will view a scene from an Academy Award winning film and see just what a good scene looks and sounds like.

They say you can’t rewrite history – but in my class you can! You can rewrite the abuse, rewrite the failure, say no to the wrong man, say yes to the right job. You can weed out the players that don’t support you and emphasize those who do. You can move from victim to survivor in a flick of your pen and have a good time doing it.

Or you can just go hog wild and make up a fantasy to your own liking, or adapt something you read in a magazine or newspaper. You can be serious or silly, or somewhere in between, but you will do it expertly.

We’ll also study dialogue, plot points, legal issues, character arcs and have fun along the way. There’s a lot to learn so, be prepared to fly!

Listen to what other students had to say:

“Linda brings clarity, knowledge, and an intense passion for sharing her love of story as relayed through film. I left class with a clear understanding of the process and structure of screen writing.”
--Paula Chaffee Scardamalia, author, speaker, intuitive and creativity coach.

“Linda is great. The way she runs her classes -- with such appreciation and direction -- creates an intimacy that I have learned to use every day writing and relationships.”
--Adam Shomer, TV Writer/Producer

“SO YOU THINK YOUR LIFE’S A MOVIE – REEL MAGIC”
AN 8-HOUR WRITING INTENSIVE

Even though you look at scenes from Academy Award winning movies every day, this class is NOT JUST FOR SCREENWRITERS. In fact, many of the students in Linda Bergman’s classes are memoirists, novelists, essayists, poets or even beginning writers taking the class because they’ve heard, “…She knows how to get you to good story and get you there fast!”

In “ So You Think Your Life’s A Movie – Reel Magic!”, you learn how to find your A, B and C stories, find the arc of those stories, create protagonists that you believe and root for and antagonists that change as much as your hero. You learn to write believable dialogue, research your project, write bios for each of your characters and create the structure of a saleable script.

During the course of the workshop, Bergman lectures, gives writing exercises and by the last day, expects her students to have written a two-page, two-person scene that they cast from other students in the class
and put it on its feet! It’s fast, it’s fun. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry. The information is cumulative so come early and stay late! Or, as Margo Channing would say: “Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy night!”

--All About Eve, 1950
